Those who have made it to 100 are wise enough to know that many of life’s most precious memories pass us by if we are so busy blindly running toward some goal. They have learned the value in the little beautiful things in life and allow themselves to peacefully enjoy them.
The group of Adventists studied have a Saturday Sabath each week. They find that this Sabbath is a powerful stress reliever. It is a “sanctuary in time” for them to focus on God, their families and nature. They use this time to be with their family, to put the rest of the week in perspective. This time provides a greater sense of well being. It lessens the confusion of everyday life.
Stress and Aging
Of course, when we are living life in a rush, we can’t help but feel stress. Inflammation is the body’s reaction to stress. Short bursts of stress can be good. Chronic stress is damaging as it triggers inflammation. Dr. Claudio Franceschi believes that over tIme the damaging effects of inflammation build up to create conditions in the body that may well promote age-related diseases.
Slow Down and Live Longer
This Lesson adds richness to life. It ties many of the other Blue Zone lessons together: eating right, having a sense of purpose and especially the last three that we will soon learn about.
