Superagers Stay Active

Exercise to stay young

Exercise can be fun. It can be so much fun!  As I begin an indepth study on Superaging,  What are Superagers? I notice an uncanny similarity of secrets between Superagers and Centenarians.  One of these secrets of living long and living to 100 or more is “Staying Active”.

About ten years ago, my husband and I decided to learn Ballroom Dancing. In 2014 we hired a teacher and learned a Waltz for our 50th anniversary. We enjoyed it so much, we decided to keep taking lessons and learn more.

Research shows that learning new things keeps your brain sharp on the journey of living long. In an article “4 Habits of SuperAgers” written in October of 2023, the number one habit listed is “SuperAgers live an active lifestyle.”  This article says that staying active is one of the best things you can do as you age.

Northwestern Medicine Geriatrician Lee Lindquist, MD says that even exercising two times a week will help lower chances of unwanted disease later in life. He is particularly studying Dementia in this article.

What Can Dancing Do?

Research suggests that the fun and engaging activity of dancing can have anti-aging effects on the brain and improve balance of those who practice regularly.

Although we didn’t begin ballroom dancing until we were 70+, these past ten years have brought so much joy.

We have met an entire group of brand new beautiful friends. Our posture has improved. Balance has  improved. Our confidence has increased. Our brain has been stretched and challenged to grow as we have learned many dances with many patterns in each dance.  Exercise is making us younger. God is renewing our youth like the eagle’s. We Praise the Lord! as we journey on toward living to 100.

Here is a picture of some of our dance friends. And there are many more.
